Odd, I thought that the SJ rules where the original question. What happens
when a PC fire elemental becomes fire in the flow? was the question (phrased
differently) that *I* responded to.

"Must", as in "take it on yourself, or it's sent" or as in "energies build up
in yourt body until they manifest"? Which you haven't proven.

In the military, I had several imposed activities That were "Must dos". All
had a variety of punishments if I refused. My body didn't automatically do
them for me if I forgot, though.

It is quite possible the the penalty for not doing the change oneself is to
have it imposed from the out side.

As the path to Character Elemental status must be chosen by the cleric when
20th level is achieved (either by becoming a psi, or by comtinuing to advance
as a more normal cleric), and as it seems to be the price for 8-10th level
spells. It does seem to be in the form of an agreement.

As part of the transformation is a shift to the etherial, the transforamtion
can be blocked by anything blocking such a sift in planes.

As doing so on purpose would be abtogating the bond with the powers on the
Elemental planes that give DS Clerics their abilities, it would be punished
by those powers, as would any cleric's vow and ethos violations in any AD&D
Game World. What cleric that's managed to get over 20th level is going to
want to give up all abilities and spells?

But, that doesn't mean that it might not be done in ignorance, or be forced
on one. Either could be attened to with an Atonement. Now ignorance can no
longer protect one,and the Flow will be avoided from this point on, as would
travel to the Outer planes.

If forced on one, the Atonement would probably be combined with a little
vengence, which would probably be the end of the cleric, as the cleric would
be going up against someone who had the power to block that change once
before, and will probably spell the end of the cleric.

Doesn't seem like it would come up more than once for any given DS Cleric, so
what's the problem.

It even helps keep them from leaving the Shpere or plane.
