One image of science fiction I have always enjoyed is that of a huge
space ship surrounded by smaller fighter ships, fighting the big ship as
well as each other. Some of the scenes from Star Wars and the cartoon
Robotech (Ack! Hope we don't have any Anime purists on the list) are
excellent examples.
Well, I am starting up a Spelljammer campaign next week, and I decided
that it presented an opportunity to capture this aspect of sci-fi. So, I
have been doing some work.
First, I bumped Elven Armadas up from 100 tons to 200. This sounds
drastic, but there are very few Armadas in my campaigns (generally one per
sphere). Then I made up a helm to power the thing (great helm, 200 ton
limit).
Next, I designed a ship to act as fighters (flitters are too small).
Called the firefly, it is basically a 4 ton flitter. It depends on its
maneuverability and low AR to survive. Most are powered by tactical helms
(helms that move at tactical speed only), and have a heavy stone-throwing
ballista (a weapon I made up).
At this point, though, I came to a problem of logisitcs. The helm,
though only capable of tactical speeds, still needs to be piloted by a
mage or priest. And since I envision these ships as being fairly fast,
they would have to be piloted by higher level characters. And the idea of
fleets of these ships being piloted by high level mages starts to strain
believability.
So, I came up with the idea for this class, the Pilot (or whatever. I
haven't really come up with a decent name.)
The concept behind the pilot is simple. He is a person who is trained
to channel magic energy as well as any mage of the same level, but his
actual knowledge of magic is far more limited. This cuts down on training
time, thus the number of XP's to rise a level.
The character class is very limited in scope, but it is not intended
to really be a PC class (although one could be one, if a GM allowed).
Only elves can be a Pilot, and only those who serve the Elven Imperial
Fleet.
Pilots use the THACO and saving throw tables of Warriors. They get
multiple attacks at higher levels, but can not specialize in a weapon.
They can only use one handed melee weapons, plus missile weapons. They
can wear leather armour and elven chain only, but can cast spells in them.
They may not use a shield. They recieve 1d8 hit points per level until
10, then 2 HP's per level after. They do not get exceptional Strength,
but can get the fighter bonus for high Constitution.
Pilots only have one real special ability: They cast spells as a Mage
of the same level, but may only cast spells from the school of Lesser
Divination (or the Universal school, if you have Spells and Magic), plus
one other school of choice. This is often Invocation/Evocation, but some
use Alteration or Abjuration. Necromancy and Divination are unheard of.
Pilots may not use Mage-only items, nor may they engage in item
creation or spell research. They can use fighter magic items. They do
not get a spell automatically when they advance a level.
Pilots use the thief table for experience points.

    Any comments?
