I agree with your points Ken, but i am not just trying to control my
players (actually, that's never a problem with me...) but trying to
maintain a logical relationship between spelljammer and groundling
campaigns (the Realms in my case). As it stands, a group like the
Zhentarim could simply buy one helm (in fact, according to the Castles
boxed set Semmenon already has one), equip a vessel, crew it with _many_
mages and begin a piracy capmaign. Depending on the volume of traffic in
Realms space, within a year they could have a fleet up and running. They
could then use this fleet to circumvent the need to control the "long road
to riches" (overland trade from the Moonsea to Waterdeep) they always are
striving for in the Realms products. This presents _many_ excellant
possibilities for adventure, but i'd like to keep the my Realms as true to
the sources as possible: thus the need to explain why many vistories in
space do _not_ automatically grant the winner a new helm, in addition to
other wealth. In other words, I'm not worried about people selling them
but using them!
I will definitely keep your points on the arcane in mind, however. Even
if helms are a _little_ easier to destroy, the Arcane would _not_ like to
see the Zhentarim moving into their buisness. Anyone else have any
thoughts on the subject?

"We look on the same stars, the sky is common, the same world surrounds
us. What difference does it make by what pains each seeks the truth? We
can not attain to so great a secret by one road..."

Victory from the Senate House" (392 AD)
