Subject: Re: Helms indestructable
One problem I've always had with spelljammer is the relative
indestructability of the helms. Every ship moving through space has to have
one, and by just beating acouple of dragonflys or wasp ships the party can
have several hundred thousand gold pieces worth of equipment at once. I
was thinking of making helms much more vulnerable by having them use the
standard item saving throw charts. The standard temporary helm replacement
spells would become much more common, and valuable as emergency equipment.
I'd rule that when a vessel was destroyed (0 hull points) the helm would
have to make a save vs crushing blow or be destroyed as well. I think most
helms would be thick wood or metal, though ceramic helms might exist as
well. To further spice things up, destroyed helms, as artifacts, could
cause a wild surge effect to appear centered on the helm itself. Perhaps a
10% chance? Maybe, to keep game balance, helms always save versus
_magical_ effects on a 2 or better? What's everyone think on this? I'd
just really like to keep helms as wondereous, powerful, but relatively
common artifacts.
Let me know your opinions and Good Gaming!!
