    My friend, who spawned this, said that the cannoball was filled with
blackpowder, flint and such.  When the ball hit something the
compression/warping caused an internal iginition, resulting in an explosion.
The problem with this seems to be a high level of randomness in whether the
ball is going to explode.  He didn't know the odds.
    Don't know how accurate he was, but it sounds feasible...
