I actually started out much the same way as you. First I bought Lost Ships, just to get a basic idea, then I purchased the War Captains Companion. With the information in those two , I managed a basic "planet-to-planet" hop around with my party. You don't need heaps of preperation, as IMHO tou just need to be a good story teller.
