This same question popped up in my Spelljammer campaign. Why would
one Common on one planet be the same as Common on a planet in a
completely different sphere?
My first inclination was to say that they are not the same, but this
bit of realism causes more head aches than it's worth, IMHO.
So, I contrived a rationale to explain it all away: the Gods of
Knowledge. See, nearly every culture has some sort of Power devoted to
knowledge. On Krynn, it's Gilean, on Toril it's Oghma, and on Oerth,
Boccob. Seeing that societies would intermingle through planar and
spacial means, they worked to insure a mutual language to facilitate
communication. They came up with a Common language and spread it
throughout the spheres and planes.
Like I said, a bit contrived. But it works, has a certain level of
logic behind it, and has saved me a lot of trouble.
