Kit it out with rudder of propulsion, sails of speed, figurehead of prtection, etc. have it topped out. Strengthrn the hull. Buy as many weapons(dual mount ballistae, light catapult, etc) as you can crew/afford. The battle dolphin is a 70 tonner, with shuttle. This gives lot's of air for weapon crew and marines. Ok, so it is a bit munchkinous, but you wanted to be able to hold your own in combat, and this ship will take out any published ship (except the Spelljammer, naturlly!). It cost me 120 000 GP (roughly, using War Captains Guide). And the shuttle is useful if you don't want to alarm the natives!
