Subject: Re: DS9 & light sails
Light sails hve been around in Sci-Fi since the 40's at least. In reference to
the DS9 ship - it was built as a two person shipm which would make the
non-sail portion 2 tons.

re: adapting to spelljammer: I would think the sails take about 90% of the
available space. This would make for large crew reqiurements but no room for
crew, which makes for a low manueverabilty unless thecrew is severly
overloaded in which case manuever get quite good.
Air would also present a problem in that while there would be quite a bit
compared to the average crew level the ship propably couldn't survive entering
an atmosphere to replenish (maybe along asteroids gravity plane would be
safe).
That leaves speed - SR 1 or 2 (no helm) unless special circumstances exist in
a specific area of space (which is how DS9 did it).
This makes for a good ship for an asteroid civilisation but not much else(aslo
good for exploring saragasso's). Of course my campaign starts in an asteroid
civilization in a remote part of the grinder.
