In the last Spelljammer novel, and in the LotSJ box set, the illithids
were living off of a strange kind of "brain mold," taking real brains
only rarely (since the SJ population was so low, slaves were very
valuable and scarce).

Hmm, this contradicts the idea of the illithid young living in the
"brain pool" in a tadpole-like stage, eh?  So much for TSR being
consistent (again).

I just checked mine, and while it did have good info (the article was
long before illithids became so popular and well-known due to all the
Underdark supplements), none of it applied to illithid reproduction.
