Actually, Mindflayers work very well as PCs, provided you make one
small change to them. (Well, probably two.)

The first change is to give them a class - the only one which they can
be - psionic. And then you start them at 1st level, but their normal 5 HD and
90% MR. And of course, you give them normal stats.

This is not overpowered. First off, the best armor class they can get
is 0 (5 base, +1 for leather armor [barding effect], 18 DEX). Of course, any
player who give his MF an 18 DEX ain't playing it right, as that 18 should be
in INT/WIS/CON. While most people think that the MR would be a major advantage,
it's not. I work MR as a PERMANANT thing, inherent to the creature. In other
words, a creature with MR cannot lower the MR. Thus, all those handy 'cure'
spells from the party cleric don't work all that often. Also, these guys
can't gain any more HP until they become 6th level.
The reason why I'm posting this is because I am just now finishing a
game where one of the PCs is a mind flayer. IT hasn't been that annoying
because it was played right. This means that it's identity was hidden for a
long time, and he manipulated the hell out of the rest of the party. As such,
all of his powers were telepathic in nature (As they should be). Of course,
now that said MF has gained the 'ultimate power' aritifact that he's been
seeking, he is going to be a bit mroe annoying than he was before...
