Subject: Re: Light Amplification Crystal
Several people have pointed out the drawbacks of using the "continual light
amplification crystal" as a weapon. What if the technology was used for a
different purpose, such as a communication device? The mirrored crystal could
be used as the primary component of a lighthouse-like structure. When the
continual light is cast of the crystal, the beam of amplified light could traverse
several AU's, perhaps even to the opposite side of a star system. If the light
source is shielded by some kind of hood, the hood could be moved back and forth
causing the "laser" to transmit in Morse code (or the equivalent). Since the light
is concentrated into a beam, it is less likely to dissipate before it reaches its
target.

A possible variation would be to place the laser on a rotating platform, giving a
form of beacon, similar to the ones used at airports.

Highport, in the Astramundi Cluster, has some kind of beacon device, but I don't
think it's as powerful as a laser.

Just some musings...
