What kind of idiot risks using a spelljammer against superior magic? You've
got mobility, hit them where they're weakest! Ie, more than 100", fireball
range, away! You do _not_ have set piece battles when one side has spelljammers
and the other doesn't. You drop raiding parties off, pick them up, repeat.
After your enemy has slogged all day to go 10 miles while you have raided
_every_ ungarrisoned enemy supply depot in 100 miles, dropped every bridge,
switched all the road signs, cut off every foraging party, _then_ you have
your set piece battle after all their mages are exhausted with the effort
of magicly sustaning their supply.

Did I mention that you don't let them get much sleep? If they have campfires
you can bombard their camp. I like using freeze dried troll, what gets
results with you? If they don't have fires so you don't spot them, they are
dead meat to the trolls, if the have fires to deal with the trolls cast
Pyrotechnics, blind everybody for 120' and do a smash and grab raid on
their armory, presuming they don't sleep with their armor on...

A spelljamming groundling empire might see no reason to use its ships in
wildspace. Why cut down the armed complent by a factor of 20 for a
slightly more diverse set of trade goods? The groundling SJ navy is
probably extremely proficient in takeoff, landing, operating in a atmosphere
and extremely inexperienced in long journeys and wildspace battles. It
is a lot easier to intercept a ship in wildspace than one going from point
to point on a planet.
