Subject: Re: Groundlings using spelljammers
I'm new here so sorry if I'm dragging out an old debate. I've just
finished reading the spelljammer boxed set and I think the reasons they give
for spacefarers not interfering with groundling politics sounds fine and
reasonable. What bothers me is why groundlings haven't made use of
spelljamming helms for groundling politics.

Consider a groundling King who got hold of 3 Hammerships. Without
taking the ships out of the planets atmosphere he can still make great use
of them. They provide increadibly rapid transportation and communication.
A Hammership that didn't leave the atmosphere and so didn't have to worry
about air can carry 625 men ( page 22 sidebar ). 3 of these ships could
transport an army, making return trips if nessesary. Almost 2000 men could
be dropped behind enemy walls, (although a castles catapults would be
an obvious worry here). In naval battles, flying spelljammers would have
great advantages in speed and maneuverability. With rapid flybys and
dropping boulders out the jettison as bombs, a single spelljammer could
turn the tide of a large naval battle. Of course with clever tactics and
magic the enemy could defend itself against these ships, I'm not saying
they'd be invincible, just too powerful to ignore.

Gold is a common currency in space, and Kings have plenty of that.
Some groundling governments are aware of spelljammers, they just don't
interact often with the spelljamming community. It wouldn't be easy for a
groundling ruler to come up with this kind of idea, nor would it be easy to
aquire 3 spelljamming helms. But it would only take one ruler in a planets
history to carry out this plan, soon other kingdoms would be scrambling to
try the same thing.

Like I said, I've only just read the main boxed set, and I'm ready
to change my opinion on this topic if you'll tell me why.
