Here are some other (crazy) ideas:

Basically, an Arcane is metamagical being, a creature that grows on magical
flows. Its most frequent form is a spelljammer helm. Each helm is a
sentient being. It grows on the magical power provided by the helmsman and
as a kind of reaction to this channeling of magical energy, the ship moves.
(cfr the action-reaction principle of physics)
Together all these helms form a magical network with a helm at each node.
The Arcane we know as the blue aloof giants are alter ego's from ancient,
powerful helms. When a helm has been absorbing magicks for centuries, its
existential power has grown to such an extent that it can create an alter
ego of itself. This alter ego is born out of the network at a random place
(distance doesn't matter).
It is capable of extracting magicks from the network and can produce a new
helm with it. What type of helm ? dunno, 2 possibilities:

1. Minor or Major helms can be made. Both can grow alter ego's but the
major will always be the strongest.
2. only minor helms can be made. With use, they grow stronger and stronger
until they upgrade to major, that can upgrade itself with an alter ego.

Well, whadda'ya think ?
